Make a real difference while experiencing life in Zanzibar! 🌍 Volunteers will join Assalam’s vibrant community and work with children, young people and women across different educational and community programmes.
At Assalam International School, you can support creative art and science activities, assist in the library and lab, facilitate classes, care for permaculture gardens with children and join educational excursions.
At the Vocational Training Center, you will support women’s empowerment through Tourism & Hospitality, Culinary Arts, Baking, Early Childhood Education, Sewing and Permaculture programmes, as well as basic English and entrepreneurship activities.
At the Youth Center (Africamp), you will help organise exciting camps focused on leadership, creativity, storytelling, teamwork, self-confidence and problem-solving.

Logi, mad og transport
Volunteers will stay in shared rooms (2 people per room) at the activity site, so no daily commuting is needed. WiFi is available at the accommodation. All meals are fully provided by Assalam Community Foundation, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, with tea, coffee and water available throughout the day. Travel costs are covered according to ESC rules. In addition, volunteers will receive €500 pocket money per month for their personal expenses, allowing them to enjoy their free time and experience life in Zanzibar.
Oplæring under aktiviteten
Learning is a key part of your Zanzibar experience! Volunteers will receive practical, task-specific training throughout the activity, including teaching and facilitation methods for working with children and youth; basics of tourism, hospitality, culinary arts, sewing and vocational education; hands-on permaculture and sustainable agriculture; and skills for organising workshops, educational activities, storytelling sessions and leadership camps. You will learn by doing, while developing valuable personal and professional skills.
Deltagerens profil
For Individual Volunteering, candidates must be 18–35 years old and legally reside in an eligible country (EU Member States, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Türkiye). Applicants must have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and must not have previously participated in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. The total duration of this activity together with previous participation in EU volunteering programmes cannot exceed 12 months.

You don’t need to be an expert — motivation, curiosity and willingness to contribute matter most!
We are looking for open-minded, compassionate and proactive volunteers who are excited about living in Zanzibar and working closely with local communities. This opportunity is especially suitable for people interested in education, community development, women’s empowerment, youth work, sustainability, arts, social work or agriculture.
Experience in teaching, facilitation or youth work is welcome, but not required. What matters is your willingness to learn, share your skills, work as part of an international and local team, communicate respectfully and adapt to a different cultural environment.
We especially value volunteers who are flexible, culturally sensitive, creative and ready to take initiative.
