The foundation Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung (MHS) is committed to nature and environmental protection worldwide, with a focus on forest, peatland and wetland conservation and environmental education. The aim of the foundation is to promote the protection or restoration of valuable natural areas and to support environmental training and sustainable developments. Within this context, the foundation takes its own measures in specific local, national and international projects and provides financial support to partner organizations. In addition to local environmental education projects in Germany, our regular and long-standing commitment focuses on the diverse environmental education and climate protection projects in Sicily, resistance to dam construction on European rivers in the Balkans, community forest protection projects in Asia, and large-scale coastal protection on the Central and South American and Asian Pacific coasts.
A major focus of our foundation lies within the strengthening of environmental awareness, especially through environmental education: Project-related nature experiences for children and youngsters complement each other with motivating practical environmental protection. Children and volunteers can experience nature activities and get to know practical environmental protection measures. We give young volunteers the opportunity to become actively involved in certain projects and to train their sense of responsibility for their own consumption, climate-friendly behaviour and political action.
In our conservation work, we concentrate more and more on the establishment and support of protected areas. Our commitment ranges from small projects that fulfil important tasks in existing protected areas to long-term commitment for the designation of new protected sites and networking: The highest goal is the free development of undisturbed nature and the connectivity of valuable habitats, e.g. for migratory birds in Ramsar protected sites. In some places, human-influenced habitats are also particularly worth preserving and can be protected, for example, through the concept of large-scale Biosphere reserves.

Die gemeinnützige Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung (MHS) setzt sich weltweit für Natur- und Umweltschutz ein, mit Schwerpunkten auf Wald-, Moor- und Feuchtgebietsschutz sowie der Umweltbildung. Das Anliegen der Stiftung ist es, den Schutz oder die Wiederherstellung wertvoller Naturgebiete zu fördern und Umweltbildung und umweltverträgliche Entwicklungen zu unterstützen. Dies erfolgt durch Eigenmaßnahmen in bestimmten lokalen, nationalen und internationalen Projekten und die finanzielle Förderung von Partnerorganisationen. Unser regelmäßiges und langjähriges Engagement gilt neben lokalen Umweltbildungsprojekten in Deutschland den vielfältigen Umweltbildungs- und Natur-/Klimaschutzprojekten auf Sizilien, dem Widerstand gegen Staudammbau an europäischen Flüssen auf dem Balkan, kommunalen Waldschutzprojekten in Asien, sowie dem großflächigen Küstenschutz an der mittel- und südamerikanischen und asiatischen Pazifikküste.
Ein zentrales Thema unserer Stiftung ist die Stärkung des Umweltbewusstseins, insbesondere durch Umweltbildung. Projektbezogene Naturerlebnisse für Kinder und Jugendliche ergänzen sich mit motivierendem praktischem Umweltschutz. Junge Volontäre haben bei uns die Möglichkeit, sich in bestimmten Projekten tatkräftig zu engagieren und ihr Verantwortungsbewusstsein für den eigenen Konsum, das klimafreundliche Verhalten und ihr politisches Agieren zu schulen.
In unserer Naturschutzarbeit konzentrieren wir uns mehr und mehr auf die Einrichtung und Förderung von Schutzgebieten. Unser Engagement reicht von kleinen Projekten, die wichtige Aufgaben in bestehenden Schutzgebieten erfüllen, bis zu langfristigem Einsatz für deren Neuausweisung und Vernetzung: Das höchste Ziel ist die freie Entwicklung ungestörter Natur sowie die Vernetzung wertvoller Lebensräume, z.B. für Zugvögel in Ramsar-Schutzgebieten. Aber auch die vom Menschen geprägten Lebensräume sind mancherorts besonders erhaltenswert und lassen sich z.B. im Konzept großflächiger Biosphärenreservate schützen.
