Volunteering at the Ásgarður workshop for people with disabilities. Founded in 1993, Ásgarður is a non profit working place for around 30 disabled clients who work alongside around 7 supervisors. The aim is to give the clients the chance to work in a creative and educational environment. Both the clients and staff producetoys and household equipment, mainly from wood, but also from leather, wool, stones, etc. Most of the things being made have a correlation to I celandic traditions of farming and fishing, or to Icelandic folklore or fairy tales. Based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the staff makes sure that the work and what is produced is adapted to the workers themselves, to their ideas and inspiration.The volunteer should provide input, show initiative and be supportive to the workers. Ubytovanie, strava a doprava
The volunteer will live in a flat close to the project, in Mosfellsbær near Reykjavík, maybe sharing with 1 person, most likely alone. It is recommended that this volunteer is ok to live alone and not in the centre of Reykjavik which take 25 mins by bus. Perfect for someone who is independent and who likes nature and calmness. The volunteer will have breakfast and lunch in the project, and get in addition to that food money for the meals she/he does not get in the project as well as pocket money. A yearly bus card for the whole of Reykjavík will be given to the volunteer.
Odborná príprava počas činnosti
Training to use the tools in the workshop area will be at the start of the placement. The volunteer has to attend and on arrival training organised by AUS as well as another on arrival training and later mid term training both organised by the local National Agency. The volunteer‘s role is to provide assistance in the wood workshop where the daily work of Ásgarður is done; The volunteer is encouraged to be creative and to involve clients into stimulating activities; To promote the clients’ creativity; participate in theatre work and preparations of the theater workshops and other creations; the volunteer will also participate in the hiking club, which does hiking tours at a slow pace, whilst enjoying the scenery and surroundings.
