Das Mendelssohn-Haus Leipzig wurde 1844/1845 erbaut und ist die letzte und einzig erhalten gebliebene Privatadresse Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys, der mit seiner Familie seit 1845 in der Beletage wohnte und hier am 4. November 1847 starb.
Das nach über 15jährigem Engagement von Maestro Kurt Masur am 4. November 1997 vollständig rekonstruiert eröffnete Haus beherbergt heute vor allem ein Museum. Die unter Verwendung originalen Mobiliars wieder eingerichtete Wohnung wird als authentischer Ort wahrnehmbar. Im Erdgeschoss des Hauses wird für den Besucher die mendelssohnsche Musik mit modernen Möglichkeiten (Effektorium, digitale Bibliothek/Phonothek, Paternostervitrine) erlebbar.
Das Museum versteht sich aufgrund seines originalen historischen Bestandes aus der Zeit, in der Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy an diesem Orte lebte und starb, als musikalisches und museales Kompetenzzentrum für das Erbe des Komponisten. Dessen Zweck ist es, das Leben, das Werk und die Wirkungsgeschichte des Komponisten, Dirigenten, Klaviervirtuosen, des Mittlers zwischen den Religionen und des Europäers par excellence zu präsentieren, als Bildungsgut zu vermitteln und die Menschen mit Sammlungen, Ausstellungen, Konzerten und Projekten für sein Erbe zu begeistern. Im Bewusstsein der Bedeutung Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys für die europäische Musikgeschichte und im Besonderen für die Musikstadt Leipzig erfüllt die Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Stiftung als Träger des Hauses diese Aufgabe für eine breite lokale, nationale und internationale Öffentlichkeit.
Das Mendelssohn-Haus ist im Blaubuch verzeichnet und zählt damit zu den „wichtigsten gesamtstaatlich bedeutsamen Kultureinrichtungen“ in den neuen Bundesländern.

Die Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Stiftung ist dabei nicht nur Träger des Hauses, sondern auch der Internationalen Mendelssohn-Akademie Leipzig, die jedes Jahr Meisterkurse auf höchstem Niveau anbietet.

The Mendelssohn House in Leipzig was constructed in 1844/1845 and is the last and the only remaining and preserved privat address of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy who has been residing here with his family since 1845 and died here on the 4th of November 1847.
Maestro Kurt Masur was engaged in the reconstruction of the house during 15 years and on the 4th of November 1997 a fully reconstructed house was opened. Nowadays it is a museum. Having been furnished by the original furniture the appartment gives the authentic imporession. The ground floor of the building provides the visitors with modern opportunities (effektorium, digital library/record library, paternoster).
The museum is thus concentrated on the time when Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy lived and died and is considered to be the musical and museum-like center for the cultural inheritance of the composer. Its' aim is to present the life, work and the historical influence of the composer, director, piano virtuoso and mediator between the religions and the europeans. Taking into consideration the importance of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy inheritance for the European music history and the peculiarities of it for the city of Leipzig the Foundation of Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy took the responsibility of spreading the information on the local, regional and international levels.
The Mendelssohn House is included into the Blue Book and belongs to "the most significant cultural inheritances" in the Eastern part of Germany.
