Hnuti Brontosaurus (The Brontosaurus Movement) is a Czech NGO established and continuously active since 1974. The aim of this organisation is to promote sustainability, nature and cultural heritage awarness, educate through voluntary work, personal example, experience and direct contact with nature. We want to help young people to develop their skills and knowledge as well as environmental friendly attitudes and behaviours and sense of solidarity. Folowing these aims we provide especially youth different voluntary, experiential and educative activities.
Hnuti Brontosaurus is Youth organisation acknowledgement holder recognised by The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports Czech Republic. The organisation is also a „Být při tom (Be There)“ award holder, honored for the long-lasting youth voluntary work coordination.
The organisation has 1100 mambers (more than 70% up to 26 years old) and consists of 45 regional branches all around the country. The activities we provide are all-year, take place in different regions of the Czech Republic and Europe and are coordinated within programmes according to their common goals. These programmes are Action Nature, Action Monuments, Holidays with Brontosaurus, Ekostan, Kids troops, Education etc. and they join and coordinate thematic activities of all the regional branches. There is also an important International programme coordinating voluntary activities abroad (Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, India, Indonesia, Cuba). It also develops the Erasmus+ international cooperation (EVS, youth exchanges, trainings of youth workers).
We provide regular activities (kids and youth clubs every week) as well as voluntary and experiential activities – weekend events, camps in different localities. We also provide environmental education for public and high-school youth all year. All the programmes mentioned above offer up to 500 different activities per year for few thousands of participants (presentation visitors, active volunteers, education and leisure-time activities participants etc.). The whole mission of the organisation fulfilled by these activities promotes solidarity, offers young people a chance and motivation to participate in an active civic life and to help address specific issues at community, regional, national and international level. Moreover there is a huge self and pesonal development aspect within these activities (key competences and attitudes development of young people), which we can guarantee due to sophisticated and proved methodology based on non-formal and informal education approach.
The organisation is based on voluntary work of regional and local organisers. Most of them are former participants which are motivated and supported to be active and involved in volunteering. To provide this service – educate, support and develop young organisers – the office of the organisation was established in 1991 in Brno. We provide education, methodology, material and technical as well as finantial support. There is also a Voluntary centre of Hnuti Brontosaurus in Brno creating space for meeting, cooperation, education and development of our volunteers.
