Das BJW ist ein selbstständiger demokratischer Kinder- und Jugendverband. Als freier Träger der Kinder und Jugendhilfe organisiert das Jugendwerk Ferienmaßnahmen für Kinder und Jugendliche von 8 bis 18 Jahren, außerdem außerschulische Bildungsangebote und Workshops sowie interkulturelle Begegnungen und Projekte für Jugendliche von 15 bis 27 Jahren. Der Vorstand selbst besteht aus jungen Ehrenamtlichen zwischen 18 und 30 Jahren, die die inhaltliche Ausrichtung aktiv mitbestimmen. Ein Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf der Partizipation und Persönlichkeitsbildung junger Menschen. Eine der Hauptaufgaben des BJW ist es daher, junge Menschen in ihrer Entwicklung und Bildung jenseits von Schule, Ausbildung und Universität zu unterstützen, um die Entwicklung von sozialen, kulturellen und anderen Kompetenzen im gemeinsamen Miteinander zu stärken. Das Jugendwerk möchte Jugendliche durch seine Arbeit dazu befähigen, ihre kognitiven, emotionalen und sozialen Fähigkeiten zu entfalten und weiter zu entwickeln, um als selbstbestimmte Persönlichkeiten ihre Aufgaben in Familie, Beruf und Gesellschaft zu erfüllen, an der Gestaltung des gesellschaftlichen Lebens mitzuwirken und ihre Interessen und Rechte wahrzunehmen. Diese Aktivitäten - zum Beispiel die Ausbildung zu Jugendleitern mit der Juleica (Jugendleitercard) - stehen im Kontext des BJW, die Gesellschaft solidarischer, toleranter und demokratischer zu gestalten. Die Angebote richten sich daher bewusst auch an Kinder und Jugendliche aus sozial und ökonomisch benachteiligten Verhältnissen und an junge Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund sowie Geflüchtete. Im Projekt "Werkstätten für Demokratie", welches das BJW an zwei Standorten in Kooperation mit Jugendhilfeeinrichtungen der Arbeiterwohlfahrt durchführt, treffen sich junge Ehrenamtliche mit unbegleiteten minderjährigen Geflüchteten um auf lokaler Ebene Integration, Partizipation und Demokratielernen zu fördern.
Der Bereich internationaler Jugendaustausch und die interkulturelle Arbeit sind ebenfalls fester Bestandteil unseres Jugendwerks. Wir haben in den letzten Jahren internationale Jugendbegegnungen in Frankreich, der Ukraine sowie in Tschechien organisiert. Außerdem bieten wir Bildungsurlaube ins europäische Ausland sowie Workshops zu Rassimus oder Migration in Frankfurt an. Seit 2018 entsenden wir außerdem jedes Jahr Freiwillige im Rahmen des Europäischen Solidaritätskorps und möchten diesen Bereich weiter ausbauen, beispielsweise indem wir 2021 das erste Freiwillige in unserem Jugendwerk aufnehmen werden.

The BJW is an independent democratic association for children and young people. As an independent agency of the children and youth welfare service, the Jugendwerk organises holiday measures for children and young people from 8 to 18 years, in addition to extracurricular educational offers and workshops as well as intercultural meetings and projects for young people from 15 to 27 years. The board itself consists of young volunteers between 18 and 30 years of age who are actively involved in deciding the content of the activities. One focus of the work is on the participation and personality development of young people. One of the main tasks of the BJW is therefore to support young people in their development and education beyond school, vocational training and university in order to strengthen their development of social, cultural and other competences in a joint effort. Through its work, the Jugendwerk aims to enable young people to unfold and further develop their cognitive, emotional and social skills so that they can fulfil their tasks in family, work and society as self-determined personalities, participate in shaping social life and safeguard their interests and rights. These activities - for example the training as youth leaders with the Juleica (youth leader card) - are in the context of the BJW to make society more solidary, tolerant and democratic. The offers are therefore also deliberately aimed at children and young people from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds and at young people with a migration background as well as refugees. In the "Werkstätten für Demokratie (Workshops for Democracy)" project, which BJW runs at two locations in cooperation with youth welfare institutions of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Workers' Welfare Association), young volunteers meet with unaccompanied minors who have fled their homes to promote integration, participation and democracy learning at local level.
The area of international youth exchange and intercultural work are also an integral part of our youth work. In recent years we have organised international youth exchanges in France, Ukraine and the Czech Republic. We also offer educational vacations to other European countries and workshops on racism or migration in Frankfurt. Since 2018, we have also been active as a sending organisation for volunteers as part of the European Solidarity Corps and would like to expand this area further, for example by hosting the first volunteer in our youth organisation in 2021.
