Flying is not the only option

Last updated on Monday, 13/11/2023

With most European countries being close, sometimes you can reach your destination in different ways: train, bus, ferry are only some options to travel and explore Europe.

Bike

Ride across Europe, immerse yourself in an adventurous and sustainable journey. There are more almost 90.000 km of cycle routes to explore Europe. Start planning your trip and calculate how many days you will need to cycle your chosen EuroVelo route.

Train

Sit back and relax as the European countryside passes you by! Travelling by rail is a perfect way to hop from city to city, in groups both big and small. It’s also the greener mode of transport!
When booking in advance through resources such as InterRail, Rail Europe, Eurail, Omio or RegioJet you can make the perfect travel itinerary. With the option to travel at night, you can also rest before reaching your next destination. Remember to be considerate of other travellers if making your journey overnight or in big groups, some people might not want to join your party!

Bus

Travelling by bus shares some of the advantages of the train, such as the chance to enjoy the view and to travel during the night. Even though it can be slower at some points, it can be your only option to reach a remote location. You can use for instance Omio, Busbud or Comparabus to find the lowest fares.

Car

Whether you have a car or not, you can still choose the car as your mode of transport around Europe. You can use a comparison tool such as RentalCars, Kayak or Auto Europe. These options can help make your trip more flexible, social and a bit greener! There is also Blablacar, which connects drivers who have empty seats with people looking for a ride around Europe.

Whatever the options, make sure to check the insurance conditions (and evaluations!), and always bring a copy of your booking with you. Most car companies block the amount of the franchise on your Visa/MasterCard as a deposit, make sure you have this capacity on your credit card, if not you will have to pay an extra insurance.

Ferry

It may have never crossed your mind, but an overnight ferry can sometimes be your best option, especially if you are around the Mediterranean or Scandinavia. Check out for instance Ferrylines.com or Aferry.com and pick a route that suits you best!

Whatever means of transportation you choose for your trip, make sure you are informed about your rights as a passenger, download the Passenger Rights app on your smartphone and you are good to go!
